Who is Renita Lam RD?
Renita Lam RD is a Registered Dietitian with a Master’s degree in Public Health, specializing in nutrition. She received her Bachelor of Science degree in Life Sciences and Psychology from Queen’s University before completing a second undergraduate degree in Nutrition & Dietetics at Brescia University College/Western University.
She then proceeded to complete a combined Master’s degree and dietetic internship at the University of Toronto and University Health Network, during which she received several awards for academic achievement. Renita has an interest in body weight perceptions and sustainable diets and has presented her research at conferences including the Canadian Obesity Summit and the Congress for Canadian Association for Food Studies.
She believes in making the healthier choice the easier choice and focuses on realistic changes for busy lifestyles. In addition to counseling patients, Renita also teaches nutrition seminars at the University of Toronto – Faculty of Dentistry. Renita is a member of Dietitians of Canada and the College of Dietitians of Ontario.
What is a Registered Dietitian?
Contrary to popular belief, Dietitians are not the food police! Individuals become dietitians because they love food and want to make sure that their clients get to enjoy the food they’re eating while working towards their goals.
A Registered Dietitian is a regulated health professional who is trained to provide advice and counseling about diet, food and nutrition. With the abundance of nutrition information out there on the internet, it can be challenging to figure out what works for you. Dietitians undergo a 4-year undergraduate degree in nutrition followed by a 1-year internship before they are able to practice, so they are well equipped to help you separate fact from fiction and provide you with individualized advice.

What is the difference between a Registered Dietitian and a Certified Nutritionist?
In Ontario, “Dietitian” is a protected title where as “Nutritionist” is not. That means that anybody can call themselves a Nutritionist but only those who have completed a 4-year degree in nutrition and internship can call themselves a Dietitian. The College of Dietitians of Ontario regulates all dietitians in the province to ensure that they’re practicing ethically and based on the current scientific evidence.
